Welcome to the wonderful world of Brian Lewis!  Here's what I'm up to lately....

I am an Instructor in both the English Department and the Women and Gender Studies Program at Century College in White Bear Lake, MN.  I am in my fifth year teaching at Century.  I moved to Minnesota in August of 2004, but I still have a lot to learn about the state. 

Back in 2004, I completed my Ph.D. in Critical Studies in the Teaching of English at Michigan State University under the direction of Dr. Ellen Cushman.  It only took me nine years!  My dissertation was titled “LGBT Student Negotiations of Academic Literacies: The Building of Disciplinary and Campus Literacy Communities.”  Here’s a link to the dissertation if you want to check it out.

During the Summer 2009 term, I am teaching one section of ENGL 1021 (Composition 1) totally online. I haven't taught a course totally online in three years, so this ought to be interesting!  I am also running a workshop this summer on using technology with Century's Common Book (The Latehomecomer by Kao Kalia Yang) and plan to go through Teaching Circle Facilitator training.  We'll see what pans out.

When I'm not teaching at Century, I serve as Coordinator of their Online Writing Center during the Fall and Spring terms, for which I earn a three credit per term release.  I also earn three release credits per Fall and Spring term for serving as Chair of the Gen. Ed. Assessment Committee; we are currently working on both writing assessment and information technology projects.

In addition to my coursework and release time work, I'm also active on the Honors Committee, the Student Success Day Committee, the Assessment Committee, and the Writing Center Committee. 

I am excited that in approximately 15 months I will be going on sabbatical.  I'm not sure what I'll be doing yet, but right now I'm learning towards teaching in Oxford, England...if that's a possibility!!
